Michael Stablein - CDS President

Chicago Dental Society President Michael J. Stablein, DDS, PhD, died Sunday, Nov. 14, in Mexico City. He was 61.

Dr. Stablein was an active member of organized dentistry since his graduation from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in 1978. Dr. Stablein was elected treasurer of the Chicago Dental Society in 2006, and rose through the offices. His term as president began Jan. 1, 2010.

Leading up to his years with the Board of Directors, Dr. Stablein held all offices in the West Side Branch, culminating in the presidency in 1992-93 and a three-year term as Branch Director, 1997-99. He served on CDS´s Access to Care, Mediation and Membership committees for several years before turning his attention to the Midwinter Meeting. He ultimately served as General Chair of the 139th Midwinter Meeting 2004.

Dr. Stablein was also an accomplished scholar. He has a certificate in periodontics and a doctorate in pathology from UIC. He published several journal articles, and co-authored a chapter in The Histology of the Oral Mucosa. He was an instructor in periodontics and pathology at the UIC Medical Center from 1978-87.

Dr. Stablein received the F. William Towner Organized Dentistry Activity Award from the UIC College of Dentistry, for significant and meritorious activity in organized dentistry, in 2006. He had been on the UIC Dental Alumni Board of Directors since 2004.

Despite this accomplished career in periodontics, Dr Stablein was most proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Dr. M. Caroline Scholtz, and their four children: Michael, Gabriela, Andrew and Amelia.
